J. P. Coyotes In The News

Jamaicaplaincoyotes.com was featured in a story this week in the May 16 issue of the Jamaica Plain Gazette.

In his article, reporter John Ruch provides a good overview of my inspiration and intentions for the site. I hope to be able to link to the story soon at jamaicaplaingazette.com. For now, though, the story appears only in the print version of the gazette.

I saw the story in the paper. I think it's a good idea to keep a record of the sightings. I am only afraid that people will start being aggressive toward these animals. I had one sighting. It was about a year ago. I was walking in the woods off of the parking lot of the Springhouse assisted living place. I was walking with my small dog. We heard a rustle in the tall grass and two coyotes rose from the grass. I think it was daytime and they had been sleeping. Luckily, they got up and moved away from us. We were not very far from them.

One evening in late 2007 driving east on the highway portion of Centre Street with Allendale Road and Faulkner Hospital coming up on our left, we saw a coyote streak across the road left to right. The coyote disappeared into the Arboretum.

By the way, i want to point out that Jonathan's pronunciation of coyote is correct (Ki-ote) and more common to the north mid-west part of the country and Canada, but the other pronunciation (Ki-o-tee) is also correct, especially since it's derived from its southwestern and Spanish origins. I mention this because one website i found ridiculed it, but every other source validated it. It's the one I grew up using.

First paragraph: Evelyn Tate and Greg French. Second paragraph: Greg French.

Thank you.

I think I saw two coyotes while biking on Prince St one night this winter. They were going into the woods heading up to toward the seminary. I remember thinking, that they didn't look like dogs--they looked like wolves or something other wild canine.

Thanks for the interesting site.
